In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
